My Experience taking Learning Framework   At the beginning of this semester I was excited to take EDUC 1300. I had never taken a class that taught me how to study. However, this class was more than that. This class taught me how to take better notes. It taught me how to prep for tests. One thing it didn’t teach me was how to plan. I have been an avid planner for almost four years now. Although it was one of my favorite lecture topics and assignments. Most of the assignments had me reflect on myself. This was incredibly helpful in discovering how I learn. Overall, I found the class engaging.  

My Experience taking History 1   In high school, history had not been my favorite nor best subject. I did not expect to be able to absorb the facts and dates easily. Thankfully, my professor does not believe in fact and date learning for non-history majors. Instead, she taught us the big picture ideas and concepts. Most importantly though, she taught us how events lead to other events. She painted a picture with United States history. I looked forward to her lectures. She was entertaining and I knew I would learn something.  As well, she taught me how to write an essay with Chicago style citation. That essay was no picnic to write either. I have discovered that I am no historian. However, I was happy to grow  from her  class and am excited to be in her second section next semester.  

My Experience taking Federal Government   I had previously had a terrible experience in a high school government class. I was terrified that this class was going to be even worse. I was pleasantly surprised. My professor was well-spoken and told many stories. His stories were usually related to his past college experience or his time teaching at a university. His specialty is comparative politics which enhanced my learning experience. I felt like I was learning more than government, like I was learning about college and careers too. I could even compare the experience like talking to an uncle. The work was strenuous yet rewarding. By the time I finished the class, I was surprised to learn that I didn’t know everything about the government prior to entering his classroom. I was deeply changed by my experience and thankful for it.  

My Experience in Composition 1   In high school, I had excellent grammar and punctuation. Before Composition 1, I had only done one research paper in high school. This semester I learned how to research at the college level. I grew in my writing abilities significantly. However, I didn’t feel like I learned much in class or from my textbook. After a session at the tutoring center and some help from a librarian, I learned how to properly do my work. This semester has grown my confidence in my writing. As well, I have also gain inconsequential knowledge for my college career. I found joy in tutoring other students. I enjoyed peer editing others, even if I didn’t enjoy it for myself. While this class, may have been rowdy, it’s one I certainly won’t forget.

One lovely day this September, Cedar Valley's Career Services stopped by to help us determine our goals realistically. First, they had us do a visualization exercise where we wrote down where we wanted to be in ten years. A picture should be provided below. They asked me to think about... where I wanted to live, how I wanted to live, how I wanted my downtime to be. Then, they taught us the acronym of SMART goals, which I am finding really helpful in my goal-setting process. Here is a quick explanation: Specific   Measurable Attainable Realistic Time Sensitive We were asked to make Smart Goals from the visualization exercise.
